After creating a can opener graveyard, this one hasn't broken
After my old-generation handheld Swing-a-Way finally looked so bad that I was embarrassed for others to see it and I threw it away, I replaced it with the Zyliss Lock N Lift can opener (this IS a review for the Victorinox Can Opener). At first, I hated the Zyliss. After 3 months, I got used to it, and after a few more months, I loved it. It lasted three years. It would occasionally fail to pierce can lids, or would "jump the track" while turning, and make it almost impossible to complete the top removal, even after "re-piercing." This was only an occasional problem for a while, but then became frequent, and then finally, it happened almost every time that I tried to use it. I decided not to buy another one, because I considered 3 years to be an unacceptably short period of time for a can opener to last. Wow, what an ignorant decision. The Zyliss was followed by the purchase of a (handheld, manual) 2-pack of Kitchen Aid can openers. Kitchen Aid the First: handle brakes within a few turns on the very first can I try to open; Kitchen Aid the Second: will not pierce can lids. ANY can lids. So, those were followed by an OXO, which was more comfortable to use than the Kitchen Aids, and certainly more pleasant than the old school Swing-a-Way. The OXO survived 5 cans before something stripped - handle would turn, gears and blade would not. At this point, I was becoming nonplussed. Just how hard is it to make a can opener? So I spent a little time reading about can openers on Amazon (not what I consider to be the most valuable self-improvement activity). I started out by thinking that I'd just buy another Swing-a-Way, until reading that the build quality is completely different (lower) than the ones our grandparents used. I was becoming desperate. I needed a stupid can opener. Or rather, I had multiple can openers - I needed one that worked. I looked on the 'Bay for a vintage Swing-a-Way, but all that I found were used, and all the blades looked pretty sketch. In the midst of this saga, I picked up a brandless opener in Dollar General, which proved itself to be more durable than the previous two (three) much more expensive purchases, and today still lurks in the back of a drawer should it be needed in the future (it feels very flimsy, and I question the wisdom of putting it into daily, long-term use). So all this led me to decide to buy the well-reviewed Amazon Basics can opener, but when I went to add it to my cart, it displayed as out of stock. I still needed a can opener. The one sold on Amazon with "Strongest Heaviest Duty, Best Jar Opener & Tin Opener" in the title, while having stellar reviews here, has some extremely critical reviews on another site. Things like, "Handle stripped on first use." I didn't order it, as I was holding to the adage, "fool me four times, shame on you..." So I still needed a can opener. Mostly by chance, I happened on the Victorinox Can Opener. It had generally good reviews. I needed a can opener. I ordered it. And I am happy to report, finally, THIS CAN OPENER WORKS. Not only did it work, it has continued to work for the past three months...which at this point, I find astonishing. Also so far, no rust. Only four stars because the handles are a bit small for someone like myself with large hands. But frankly, who cares if it's a little uncomfortable. It isn't as bad as how the old Swing-a-Way felt, and I had been using that one since the late 1980s. Four stars also just because I'm mad. It shouldn't take months and months to buy a can opener. Almost any activity that a person might undertake is more worthwhile than can opener shopping. So buy this one and use all the time you will save yourself to paint a picture, or learn to play the piano, or plant a garden. Or just watch TV. Even that will be better - and a more valuable activity - than purchasing overpriced, cheaply-made can opener after can opener.

Better quality than most
I found this can opener to be sufficient and of better quality than most others I have. Aside from quality, it is nothing special and works as intended.

Finally a manual can opener that seems like it will last...
finally after 4 different can opners I found one that seems to be working well! There's actually a lot of harping about how cheap and crappy manual can-openers have gotten in the last 10 years... the old ones from the 80s and 90s were built to last... now even the sturdy brands from the past have outsourced and the can openers are junk! my old can opener of 20 years finally rusted up at the hinge and that's what started my search for a decent can opener!this Victorinox can opener works! it looks like it's hinge pinis stainless steel though the body is chromed steel so it could rust in the future. the bushings for the cutters are metal which 99% of the can openers out there now have plastic bushings which bend and wear down resulting in a can opener that last about 4-6 months. This can opener isnt fancy but it works and looks like it will last 20 years hopefully... if your grandmother has an old can opener from the 80s you might wanna see if she'll part with it.

Solid device
This opener works well (although I have only had it for three weeks, I use it daily). No issues with the blade dulling or the joint getting loose so far.

Hard to turn, but solidly built.
It's a great can opener. My only gripe is that it's a little hard to turn. For those of you with dainty wrists, look elsewhere to satisfy your can-opener needs. For those of you who don't mind a little extra effort, this can opener is well-built, simply styled and reliable. Four stars for the tough-to-crank complaint. Otherwise, it's good.

The Best Can Opener Ever!
This is amazing. Its without a doubt the best can opener ive ever had. While cutting the can you cant even tell its being cut until you make the full trip around the rim. Now as it being victorinox I do have a small issue as to how it operates. It starts out needing minimal torque but gradually gets harder going through the can. If this were a cheap dime store can opener ok but this is victorinox. It should be smooth throughout requiring minimal effort. That said its still amazing. The can lid is perfectly cut out leaving no barbs or gaps so it is actually safer. If you need a good can opener you well you might find better for the price but I sure havent. Also for my test can I used a thick chicken breast chunks can which bent or broke my other can openers. This one performed like a champ. Seriously get this one but keep in mind you need a fair bit of torque to finish a thick can. However if you have kids around its worth it to prevent them from cutting themselves on the can or lid.

Not like they used to be
It effectively opens cans so I gave it 3 stars. However it is nothing like my previous one. It is not as sharp and is extremely uncomfortable. It hurts my hand to use it. Should have listened to other reviews...

It works, but you can do better for about the same amount of money.
This review is only after use on about a dozen cans on each opener.I bought three different brands of top cutting can openers for my mom after her SwingAway's cutter wore out.None of the new openers matched the SwingAway in metal gage. Only the Super Kim matched the SwingAway in how rigidly the rotating mechanism(s) are held. The Victorinox was her least favorite - I concur. It works, but of the three, it was the hardest to pierce the can with and the hardest to turn while cutting the can.For about the same money, the OXO Steel was the best of the three, being the easiest to pierce and cut the cans with, but only time will tell how well it with hold up.

Hard to turn. But great in quality
I could have given five stars to the product if it was not hard to turn the cutter. Quality and sturdiness is excellent. Very good and worthy buy.

Finally, a can opener that actually opens cans!
My wife and I have tried several brands of can openers over the last several years only to find that they may work for a couple of times or for a couple of kinds of cans, but do not do the job on a consistent basis. I did my homework and researched this one, and we have been very pleased with it. It grips the can snugly and then cleanly cuts it without jumping or missing spots. Highly recommended purchase.

No better than a cheap 79p opener.
Bought this because tin openers always seem to break, so I thought ooh this'll be a good one at last I'll pay a bit extra. I mean after all they make swiss army knives! I was wrong. Probably about 40 cans of tuna later this no longer works. I will stick to the cheapo ones and just buy 3 for 79p each or whatever they cost in a cheap shop.

Sturdy and reliable tin opener
After owning several flimsy supermarket tin openers, I decided to pay slightly more for a well known and reliable brand name. I was quite surprised when I received this tin opener that it was so thin - obviously it's the standard size from side to side, but the plastic handles are quite flat. I was a bit worried that I would struggle with this as a have slight arthritis in my hands, but so far it has been fine. The cutting blade is more than sharp enough to cope with all the tins I have tried. A bonus of the thin-ness of the opener is that it fits easily into the cutlery drawer, and doesn't get caught when trying to open it like others I have owned previously. The design of the handle for turning doesn't look like it would be comfortable, but actually it is, and is easy to grip. Overall it is quite a plain design, but I like the victorinox logo on the handle, it makes it stand out from generic brands. Feels sturdy when using, no doubt it will last a good amount of time before it needs replacing.
