Intestinal fireworks
I've bought and consumed Augason Farms products before, and I was excited to try this product. I'm very glad I opened the can and tried it now instead of during a crisis because that would have been a disaster in itself. The first ingredient is black bean flakes and salt, so the burgers are salty. They taste fine, but the end result was gastrointestinal distress for me. The use by date is the year 2044, and I will be 92 years old then (God willing). How many 90 year olds do you know who are NOT on a low/no sodium diet? I'll have to throw out the product and keep the can.Regular canned black beans are not a problem for me but the dried flaked variety are somehow different. Maybe it's the added ingredients that caused my distress, I don't know. For you preppers who are buying freeze dried food and not trying it now, learn from my experience. If possible, buy small cans of anything you plan on storing. If a product doesn't agree with you, it's better to find out now rather than during a disaster.

Great staple for camping / emergency food storage
Even though this is billed as "emergency" food, this is arguably the best black bean burger I've ever had. Without adding any seasoning, the flavor is savory with a healthy veggie component -- think green pepper and maybe chives? Onions? It's perfectly edible as is, but goes great with typical hamburger toppings like cheese, onions, ketchup, mayo, etc. Also worth noting: unlike most "emergency" food out there, the suggested serving sizes actually yield a decent-sized portion. We experimented with different cooking styles, and found that the best results come from thinner patties. It's very easy to overcook veggie patties like this, so stick to low / med-low heat in a covered skillet. A light coating of oil helps ensure you wind up with a well-formed patty.Keep in mind that this is not a perfect drop-in replacement for ground beef. It cooks differently, tastes different, and has a different texture when it's done. This isn't great for recipes that call for loose ground beef (lasagna, sloppy joes, etc) due to the texture, but it makes outstanding burgers. This also allows for some easy, unique dishes: try lining a tin cup with this paste, then fill it with an egg, shredded cheese, and chopped veggies for a healthy and hearty snack.

Its a great product! Husband loves beef burgers and I don't
bought this based on reviews and my familiarity with the company. Its a great product! Husband loves beef burgers and I don't. But ground turkey goes bad before I can get to it. Which is where this comes in. Just mix a little with some water (they give you the proportions on the label) and fry it up like a burger. You can eat it as is, or crumble it as a meat substitute for tacos or spaghetti sauce, etc. The mix is well seasoned, and it might be too much for some. and if you were to make it the basis for a vegetarian diet it would become monotonous. But for once a week, its great. Add various condiments or cheeses to change up the flavor. It might come off as a little dry, but that's what mayonnaise and gravies and ketchup and mustard are for!! And its why it only get 4 instead of 5 stars.

Easy and Delicious
Curiosity got to me and we opened one up, easy to prep and cook, smell great and taste good. Of the 7 of us who tried them only 1 person didn’t like them and although I’m not a vegetarian, these were good and I would eat them again.

For non-emergencies as well
We are the kind of people that grow a lot of our own food and have quite the stock pile of home canned healthy and organic foods. We also have family members that are vegetarian. I am happy to have a quick vegetarian meal at my fingertips. I currently have about 10 #10 cans of the Black bean burger as well as a large pail in storage. I may be a little salty to some people, however, mixing with some rice or your own beans will dilute the sodium content if need be. I stuff our black bean burgers with cheese or pickled jalapenos, I have also made them as directed and then put mushrooms and gravy on top. We enjoy the black bean burger and it is a great value.

There's hope for me yet
I'm a steak & potato (and Big Mac) kind of person but am trying to eat healthier with age so I decided to try this because it just sounds healthier. The taste of this black bean burger is actually pretty good. Not too bad as burgers, but I prefer to add it to soups and chili (adds thickness and extra flavor).

A little salty, but delicious!
Bought this to try it before we stock up on things we don't like. The can came in in good condition and sealed properly. All was well and in tact as we opened it and cooked up 12 servings. From the 12 servings mix we made 8 patties. I ate two and enjoyed them thoroughly. These do have a lot of salt, but as these will be used for camping and cycling through a meal plan we need the salt for recovery. They smelled like taco seasoning and cooked fairly quickly. We added grilled onions, lettuce, tomatoes, and all the other items for a burger.

Very satisfied!!!
I am trying to eat more healthy meals. The recipes and tips in these reviews are very helpful. I am not a vegetarian but have been contemplating it for a while now. I received this today and the first thing I made was hamburgers. Making them thinner and cooking over low to medium heat is definitely the way to go. This is not meat so don't try to cook it like you would a regular hamburger. The consistency is very different then meat. The longer you cook them the dryer they will be. I made my patties about a 1/2 inch thick which I feel was too much. I will try a 1/4 next time. My burgers were nice and crunchy on the outside and soft in the middle. They tasted very good and there is already enough spices added but you can always add your favorite seasoning. Cooking burgers with this is definitely a learning curve but given time I will perfect it. I'm looking forward to making the burrito and burger salad with this. I will make sure to update this review when I do. Overall, I am very satisfied with my purchase so far.
