Gorgeous Representation
2019 Schleich Dracorex This figure is one I have been eagerly anticipating since I first saw the prototype images earlier in the year, and it has been well worth the wait! Standing at about 4in. high and about 7.5in long, this is a moderately sized figure, but packs an impressive amount of detail. From head to toe, this model is covered in individually sculpted scales. They are some of the most organic looking scales I’ve ever seen on a figure. Phenomenally done! The back has five rows of osteoderms that run the entire length of the body and tail. Skin folds and wrinkles are plentiful. The skin on the left side bunches up and wrinkles as the leg moves forward, while the skin stretches realistically on the right as that leg moves back. Sagging skin hangs from the neck. Veins run along the belly. Muscles appear to bulge and flex. Every horn on the head, and gnarled bump on the face is lovingly sculpted and painted. My only problem in the detail department is the slight shrink wrapping, but it’s nothing too severe. As far as accuracy, I’m not an expert on the species, but everything appears to be fairly accurate with one major exception: the hands. More specifically, the wrists. They’re pronated Jurassic Park style. Other than that, they’re well done. The hands have the proper number of fingers. They’re well proportioned. The claws are painted, despite being incredibly small. My only other nitpick is that the feet are slightly large, but not to a ridiculous degree. Schleich is notorious for dulling their claws and horns. I’m happy to say that while still blunted, they are far more natural than some of their other recent figures. The dinosaur boasts an eye catching paint scheme that is both bold and vibrant, while still somehow subdued and naturalistic. There are purples, reds, pinks, yellows, oranges, and browns. Just an amazing variety of colors in use here. Everything is perfectly applied. The claws are painted an off white color with a dark wash which gives them a very real appearance. The eyes are a glossy red, and really stand out. The tongue is a deep purple, and has a genuine wet appearance. Overall, this is my favorite representation of this animal. The sheer beauty of the sculpted detail and paint scheme make up for the anatomical shortcomings. Schleich has had a long history in the dinosaur collecting community, and has produced some iconic models over the years. They’ve also been overlooked by many collectors who want more scientifically accurate models. In recent years, Schleich have been making an effort to win back some of those collectors. While this figure is not perfect, it is yet another major step forward for the company, and a highly recommended addition that collectors should not overlook.
